What to know in China
Three companies run fully driverless robotaxis in mainland China: Apollo Go (Baidu), Pony.ai and WeRide. Pony.ai started fully driverless commercial service with its Gen-7 cars in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing on Nov 6, 2025. Its fleet stood at 1,975 robotaxis on June 30, 2026, and it is aiming for more than 3,500 by year end. WeRide runs driverless robotaxis around the clock in Guangzhou, where its service area has tripled since the end of 2025 and now spans the Huangpu, Tianhe and Haizhu districts. It says it keeps widening its driverless area in Beijing as well.
Apollo Go gives the biggest numbers. Baidu reported 3.2 million fully driverless rides in Q1 2026 and more than 22 million cumulative public rides as of April 2026. Its Q2 2026 release put the global count at 28 cities, a figure that includes places outside China such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Baidu has not broken that list down city by city inside China.
Booking is the open question for a visitor. Apollo Go rides are booked in the Apollo Go app. No booking app has been confirmed for Pony.ai or WeRide rides in China, none of the three uses Uber, and no source says whether a foreign passport holder can sign up. In the US, Waymo runs driverless service in cities like Phoenix and San Francisco, while China spreads it across several companies at once. Operator detail lives on the Apollo Go, Pony.ai and WeRide pages.
