About MOIA

MOIA is part of Volkswagen, and its autonomous vehicle is the ID. Buzz AD. It operates in two cities, one in Germany and one in the US, and neither is open to the general public yet.

On Jul 15, 2026, MOIA started a passenger test operation in Hamburg. It is a free pilot for selected residents who registered in advance, with up to ten ID. Buzz AD vehicles and a trained safety operator in each one. The area covers parts of Winterhude, Barmbek and Wandsbek.

In Los Angeles, MOIA and Uber began testing autonomous ID. Buzz vans with safety operators on Apr 8, 2026, with about 10 vans on the road. The plan is commercial rides on Uber with safety operators by the end of 2026 and driverless rides in 2027, pending permits from the California DMV and CPUC. California's permit system is explained on the California rules page.

Booking and riding

Right now you can only ride MOIA's autonomous service if you live in the Hamburg pilot area and were selected. Those riders book in the MOIA app, and the pilot is free. Downloading the app in Hamburg won't get anyone else an autonomous ride, since the test is limited to pre-registered residents.

Los Angeles has no public riders yet. When commercial rides start, the plan is for them to come through the Uber app, at first with a safety operator on board. MOIA has not announced rules on age, luggage, pets or airports. Anyone who wants a robotaxi in Los Angeles today can use Waymo, which is open to anyone there.

Recalls and investigations

No MOIA recall or regulator investigation is on record. Two MOIA events are logged: the start of testing with Uber in Los Angeles on Apr 8, 2026 and the Hamburg passenger pilot from Jul 15, 2026. Both run with safety operators aboard. A future recall or investigation would be added to the safety log.
