Riding Waymo in Los Angeles
That Nov 12, 2024 opening covered about 80 sq mi, available to all riders 24/7. LA Magazine reported in mid-2025 that the area had grown past 120 sq mi of LA County, adding Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, the full length of Sunset Blvd, and a run from Mid-City down La Cienega and La Brea to Inglewood and Westchester. Riders must be 18 to ride alone, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, which are manually driven, can be requested in the app.
LAX is the big gap. Electric Vehicles reported that the airport's operator has granted no AV access and given no timeline, Waymo's city page says it doesn't serve LAX, and the reported workaround is the LAX/Metro Transit Center plus a free shuttle. Freeway rides were paused on May 21, 2026, and on Jul 29, 2026 Waymo said LA would follow Phoenix in the coming days. September reports describe LA freeway rides, but no restoration date was found.
Waymo Premier ($29.99 a month, invite-only) launched with select riders in LA, San Francisco and Phoenix. No other LA operator carries the public. MOIA has about 10 autonomous ID. Buzz vans testing with safety operators and targets Uber rides by the end of 2026, and Zoox is testing, with an Uber partnership aimed at LA by mid-2027. In California, Waymo holds the CPUC permit that allows driverless fares, which Zoox lacks.
