What's happening in Minneapolis
Waymo's Minneapolis testing started after an announcement reported by TechCrunch on Nov 20, 2025, the same week it named New Orleans and Tampa. The cars have been mapping and testing since, with no public riders. Tampa has since opened driverless rides to everyone, and Minneapolis has not.
City Hall then took center stage. On Oct 1, 2026 the City Council voted 7-6 for the Workers Drive Minneapolis ordinance, which would require a licensed human safety monitor in robotaxis from October 2027. Mayor Jacob Frey said he would veto it, and Alpha News reported that he did on Oct 2, 2026. Overriding the veto would take nine votes. One later report described the ordinance as not passed, so its status is unsettled. Details are on the Minneapolis rules page.
There is an autonomous ride in the metro, with a person on board. May Mobility runs microtransit in Eden Prairie with a licensed operator, as Minnesota law requires for that service. For a ride with no one at the wheel, the nearest cities are Denver and Nashville.
