Where the cars go
Waymo covers roughly 50 sq mi of Tampa. From Westshore and Sweetwater Creek it runs east past MacFarlane Park and Tampa Heights to Ybor City and Highland Pines in East Tampa, north to Northwest Park and Temple Crest, and south to Hyde Park. Tampa International Airport is not on Waymo's list and wasn't mentioned at launch.
Tesla's zone is narrower, about 23.6 sq mi. It follows Nebraska Ave (US 41 Business) north of Downtown and Hyde Park, covering West Tampa, Tampa Heights, Riverside Heights and parts of Seminole Heights, west to Egypt Lake-Leto and south to near I-275 and northern downtown. Tampa Heights and West Tampa fall inside both operators' maps, so riders there can compare.
Tampa International sits beside Westshore, at the western end of Waymo's map, yet it isn't on Waymo's airport list, and Tesla's zone stops further east, so neither service reaches the terminals. Ybor City and Westshore are Waymo-only destinations, while West Tampa and Tampa Heights can be reached in either app.
What to know in Tampa
In Tampa the order of arrival is reversed. Tesla went first, on Jul 21, 2026, the same day as Orlando, with several outlets reporting unsupervised Model Y rides. Anyone with the Robotaxi app can book, though riders under 18 need an adult aboard.
Waymo's path was slower. TechCrunch reported in Nov 2025 that Waymo would start manual driving in Tampa, and Waymo said on Jul 8, 2026 it would soon begin employee-only operations. Public riders came on Sep 1, 2026, the same day as Denver and San Diego, in invited batches. On Oct 14, 2026 Waymo opened Tampa to anyone with its app. For how the two services differ, see Waymo vs Tesla Robotaxi.
