Riding Waymo in London
Waymo first announced London plans on Oct 15, 2025, with fleet partner Moove and a goal of driverless rides in 2026. ZAG Daily reported in January 2026 that Waymo was planning a September London launch and that it doesn't use remote driving, where a human takes control from afar. September passed without a launch. On Sep 24, 2026, Waymo published its 'Vision for London' and said it is ready to work with London to earn its consent.
That consent is the gate. Under the UK's Automated Passenger Services scheme, in force since May 15, 2026, Waymo needs approval from the Department for Transport and consent from Transport for London before carrying paying riders. When it does launch, bookings would go through the Waymo app. No service area, airport plan or age rule has been published, and Waymo lists London under 'Up Next'. Details are on the UK rules page.
Meanwhile, Londoners can already be matched with a supervised Wayve car on Uber. If Waymo launches as planned, it would be the first London service with nobody in the driver's seat, which is how Waymo runs today in cities like San Francisco and Phoenix. Waymo is also preparing Tokyo, aiming for 2027.
