What's happening in Doha

Every robotaxi trip in Doha has a person on board. The service is a fare-charging commercial pilot that Pony.ai runs with Mowasalat, and trained safety operators ride along each time. The pilot opened in December 2025.

Bookings go through the Karwa app, not Uber. The area spans Old Doha and West Bay, including the Corniche, the National Museum of Qatar, the Museum of Islamic Art and Old Doha Port. Pony.ai also says the service connects to Hamad International Airport, again with a safety operator.

Operator-free rides have reached the public only once. During the AEMOB forum, on Sep 7 to 9, 2026, Pony.ai let members of the public ride its Gen-7 robotaxis with nobody in the driver's seat. That was a demonstration, and the regular pilot still runs with operators. In US cities such as Phoenix or Los Angeles, Waymo rides run with the driver's seat empty.
