Riding Nuro and Lucid in San Francisco Bay Area
Three companies share the project. The vehicles are Lucid Gravity models, the program is Nuro's, and the rides go through Uber, with Nuro's own page saying the robotaxi will be available exclusively via the Uber app. Nobody will need a separate download, because a normal Uber request is how riders would be matched with one of these cars once public service opens. Nuro and Lucid covers the partnership's background.
Public timing has stayed loose. Uber's Jun 17, 2026 release, which also announced plans for Houston in 2027, said service would launch first in the San Francisco Bay Area 'later this year', and Nuro's page says late 2026. No public launch had been confirmed as of Oct 13, 2026, and nothing has been published on a service area, airport access, freeways or age limits. With only employees riding and a trained driver at the wheel, it runs as a safety-driver service.
San Franciscans who want a robotaxi now can open Waymo, which takes anyone in its own app, or wait for a Zoox Explorer invitation and its free rides. Tesla's Bay Area trips have a human driver. Anyone set on booking a robotaxi inside Uber can already do it elsewhere, with Waymo on Uber in Austin and Atlanta.
