Riding Zoox in Phoenix

Zoox cars are on Phoenix roads with no public passengers. Electrek reported on Mar 9, 2026 that Zoox had expanded testing to Phoenix and Dallas, describing them as rapidly growing metropolitan areas, and that the company has a Phoenix depot and a Scottsdale Fusion Center. Electrek is the only source here, and Zoox hasn't confirmed those details. No service area, fleet size, rider start date or airport plan has been published.

Arizona's rules allow fully autonomous vehicles to run without a human driver once the operator files a law enforcement interaction plan and a written compliance statement with ADOT, as Arizona rules explains. Elsewhere Zoox has gone from employee rides to a free public waitlist to paid service, and Phoenix hasn't reached the employee stage in any report. If it opens, booking would run through the Zoox app.

Waymo already covers about 350 sq mi of the metro, from Scottsdale to Chandler and Gilbert, through the Waymo app, and it serves Sky Harbor and offers teen accounts. The nearest public Zoox ride is in Las Vegas, with paid service between fixed stops on the Strip and at Harry Reid airport.

Phoenix is also where public driverless rides began in the US, when Waymo opened them to riders on Oct 8, 2020, so a Zoox launch here would arrive in the most established robotaxi market in the country, against a service that already reaches Sky Harbor.
