Riding Waymo in Houston
Invited riders went first, on Feb 24, 2026, in roughly 25 sq mi: the Heights, Woodland Heights, Rice Military, the Fourth and First Wards, Downtown, Montrose, Midtown and Upper Kirby. On May 13, 2026, KPRC reported an expansion to nearly 50 sq mi that added EaDo, the Texas Medical Center, parts of northeast Houston and NRG Stadium. Waymo's own map runs from the Heights and Kashmere Gardens in the north through Rice Village to the Astrodome area.
Houston isn't an Uber market for Waymo, so booking happens in the Waymo app. Riders must be 18 or older to travel alone, and teen accounts are not available. William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental are both missing from Waymo's help-center list, so plan another way to reach the airport. No source says whether Houston trips use freeways.
Tesla, the city's other robotaxi, serves a separate 25 sq mi triangle around Jersey Village and Willowbrook through its own app, far from Waymo's central zone. Tesla lets riders 8 to 17 travel with an adult, while Waymo requires solo riders to be 18 and offers no teen accounts here. Zoox began manual mapping in Houston around Sep 1, 2026 with no riders, and Uber, Nuro and Lucid expect a premium service in mid-2027. On game days, NRG Stadium sits inside Waymo's zone.
