Riding Tesla in Houston
Tesla picked a suburban corner of Houston for its start, a 25 sq mi triangle with US-290 on the southwest side through Jersey Village and Harvest Bend, SH-249 on the northeast side toward Willowbrook Mall, and about 5.5 mi of FM 1960 across the top. The @robotaxi account announced Houston and Dallas together. Launch videos showed nobody in the front seats, but it isn't clear whether the whole Houston fleet is unsupervised.
You book only in the Tesla Robotaxi app. Anyone 18 or older can book and ride alone, riders 8 to 17 can come along in a Model Y with an adult, and children under 8 can't ride. No airport service, freeway use or Houston fare has been published. Inside the triangle, Tesla is the only robotaxi that reaches you.
Waymo serves a different part of the city, nearly 50 sq mi through the Heights, Downtown, Montrose, the Texas Medical Center and NRG Stadium, all well southeast of Tesla's triangle, and it's booked in the Waymo app. Which one a Houston rider uses comes down mostly to location. Zoox is testing and mapping, and Nuro and Lucid have only announced plans with Uber for mid-2027.
Both Texas launches came shortly before the state's new rules for commercial automated vehicles applied. Under SB 2807, companies must hold an active TxDMV authorization to run commercial automated vehicles from May 28, 2026, and TxDMV said on Jun 2, 2026 that enforcement had begun. The Texas rules page covers what that means for Tesla and the other Houston operators.
