When Waymo opened to its first public San Diego riders on Sep 1, 2026, San Diego International was left out. Axios San Diego reported that Waymo plans airport service in the coming months, with no date set.
Waymo's San Diego area covers about 50 sq mi, from Logan Heights to Pacific Beach and from Sunset Cliffs to Normal Heights, taking in downtown and Mission Bay. It has been open to everyone with the Waymo app since Oct 14, 2026, and highways were not part of the launch. Zoox began testing in San Diego in September 2026 without riders. For a flight out of SAN today, a robotaxi can only take you to a point inside the service area.
Axios San Diego reported that Waymo plans freeway rides for the coming months along with the airport, and neither has a date. Teen accounts aren't offered in San Diego, so riders must be 18 to ride alone. Zoox, the other company in town, is still mapping with a retrofitted test fleet and has named no airport plan.
