Riding Tesla in Austin

Austin is where Tesla started, with invite-only rides on Jun 22, 2025, a safety monitor in the front passenger seat and a flat $4.20 fare. Some rides with no monitor began on Jan 22, 2026. Freeways have been in the zone since about Sep 1, 2025, and on those routes a Tesla safety driver sits in the driver's seat, though no source says whether the unsupervised cars use freeways now. Reported zone sizes conflict, from 246 to 288 sq mi, and a rough outline stretches from Tech Ridge and Pflugerville south to Del Valle and McKinney Falls.

Booking happens only in the Tesla Robotaxi app. You must be 18 to book or ride alone, and you can't book for someone else. Kids 8 to 17 can ride in a Model Y with an adult, and children under 8 can't ride at all. Cybercab rides began on Sep 3, 2026 in the same app, in a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals that takes riders 13 and up with an adult.

Waymo, the other driverless operator in Austin, books only through Uber, takes no riders under 18 without an adult and has a smaller reported zone of about 140 sq mi. Zoox carries only employees and their guests. NHTSA audit query AQ26002, reported on Sep 4, 2026, concerns Tesla's Cybercab. See Cybercab and Waymo vs Tesla Robotaxi.
